Moral competence has become a most promising concept in psychology and education, and in other social sciences. For centuries only moral orientations (i.e., moral values, principles, attitudes, affects, ideals, consciousness) have been thought to determine human behavior and decision-making. They are indeed essential. Yet, they do not account for the vast difference between people in regard to behavior and decision-making. Even criminals do have moral orientations etc., but they lack moral competence. If people do not possess sufficent moral competence they can solve problems and conflicts only through using violence and deceit or through submitting to authority.

With our Moral Competence Test (MCT) we can make moral competence visible, that is, we can measure it OBJECTIVELY and VALIDLY. With it, research could show that moral competence is causally related to many forms of behavior.

With our Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion (KMDD), and its sister method Discussion Theater, it has become possible to foster moral competence very effectively with little effort of time and money and without having to make changes to the system. Thus, with the KMDD we can contribute to a better world. But we can achieve this only when we train teachers to apply the KMDD adequately. (Lind 2019)
